Counselling vs Psychotherapy

What's the difference?

People often wonder about the difference between counselling and psychotherapy. While both offer a supportive space to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences, they can differ in focus and depth. At times they may naturally overlap, though this is not always the case and will depend on your needs and the focus of the work.

This section outlines how each approach works and how they may support you, helping you decide what feels right for you.

Counselling

Counselling provides a confidential and supportive space where you can be truly listened to and understood. It focuses on the challenges and experiences you are facing in the present, helping you explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment. In this space, you can reflect on what is happening for you, gain new perspectives, and develop your own ways of coping and moving forward. The aim is to support you in finding clarity, understanding yourself better, and taking positive steps at your own pace.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, on the other hand, often explores deeper emotional patterns, long-standing difficulties, and the underlying reasons behind thoughts and behaviours. It may involve reflecting on past experiences and relational patterns to promote lasting change. Psychotherapists usually have advanced training, and the work is generally more in-depth and longer-term than counselling.
